Welcome!

Welcome!

As part of Augustana Lutheran Church's 2014 Summer Devotional program, we'll be reading through The Diary of an Old Soul by George MacDonald.  This is a devotional book with a brief poem for each day of the year.

The text is in the public domain, and is readily available for free online.  For example (click on the colored text below to view):

Also as an audiobook from LibriVox:

If a hard copy is desired, such can be acquired at small expense online.  For example:

One might also have luck at a used bookstore.

There will be a new post every Friday.  Starting on Friday, June 6, and continuing until the last Friday of my internship at Augustana (August 15), I will share my reflections on the previous week's readings and a brief preview of the coming week's readings.  We will follow the calendar year, rather than starting at the beginning of the book.  I will begin my reflections with the devotion for Saturday, May 31.

Readers from Augustana or others who happen by are most welcome to join in the conversation by posting comments.  All comments will come to me for moderation before being published, so they will not appear immediately but should within a day or so.  I have no intention of filtering out anything but spam and rudeness.

MacDonald did not intend for his poems to stand on their own.  His dedication of this volume is as follows:

Sweet friends, receive my offering.  You will find
Against each worded page a white page set:—
This is the mirror of each friendly mind
Reflecting that.  In this book we are met.
Make it, dear hearts, of worth to you indeed:—
Let your white page be ground, my print be seed,
Growing to golden ears, that faith and hope shall feed.
YOUR OLD SOUL
This blog is now the mirror of our friendly minds, reflecting Mr. MacDonald's words.  It is my prayer that our conversation this summer will feed us in faith and hope.
